Car window repair in Winston-Salem almost always means car window replacement. Door windows, the small quarter windows behind them and most rear windows are made of tempered glass, and tempered glass does not chip: it holds together until it fails, then falls into thousands of small pieces. There is nothing left to fill, so the fix is a new piece of glass set in the door or the frame.

Auto Glass Winston-Salem is Impex Auto Glass serving Winston-Salem, so the new glass is fitted where your car is parked. This page covers what to do in the first hour after a window breaks, how door and back glass are replaced, how long each takes, and how insurance and North Carolina’s glass rules apply.

First hour after a window breaks
- Stay safe. If the window was broken in a break-in, do not touch more than you need to before you have taken photos, and call the police if anything was taken. A police report helps with an insurance claim.
- Take photos of the window, the glass inside the car and anything damaged, for your insurer.
- Take valuables out of the car. An open window invites a second visit.
- Cover the opening with heavy plastic taped to the paint, not to the rubber seals, if rain is on the way.
- Do not drive with glass on the seat. Brush the large pieces off carefully, with gloves, or leave it for the technician.
- Note the details Impex will need: year, make and model, which window (front or rear door, driver or passenger side, quarter or back glass), and the VIN if you can get to it.
Which glass is which
| Window | Where it is | What replacing it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Door glass | The window that rolls down in a front or rear door | Door panel off, broken glass cleared from inside the door, new glass set on the regulator |
| Quarter glass | The small fixed window behind a door, or in the door frame | Often bonded or held in a seal; trim may come off to reach it |
| Vent glass | A small triangular window at the front or back of some doors | Similar to quarter glass, on fewer vehicles |
| Back glass | The rear window of a car or SUV, or the slider in a truck | Usually bonded in place; defroster lines and wiring reconnected |
Getting the right part matters more than people expect. The same model can carry different glass by year, trim, tint shade or features such as a heated rear window, an antenna in the glass or a sliding rear panel on a pickup. Impex checks the glass against your vehicle by VIN before it is ordered, so the piece that arrives is the one that fits.

Three short steps: where the damage is, your vehicle and how to reach you. Say which window is broken, and whether the car is parked at home or at work.
How a door window is replaced
- Protect the car. Seats and paint near the door are covered, because tempered glass gets everywhere.
- Open the door. The inside door panel comes off so the technician can reach the window channel and the regulator, the mechanism that raises and lowers the glass.
- Clear the glass. Broken pieces are taken out of the door, the channel and the seals, and the inside of the car is vacuumed.
- Set the new glass. The new window is fitted to the regulator and run up and down to check that it seals and moves freely.
- Close up. The door panel goes back on, switches and speakers are checked, and the car is ready.
Impex’s figure for a side window is 30 to 60 minutes, and the car can be driven straight away. There is no adhesive to cure on a door window that runs in a channel.
How back glass is replaced
Most back glass is bonded into the body much as a windshield is. The old glass and its adhesive are cleared from the frame, the new glass is set, and the defroster grid, any antenna and the rear wiper (on an SUV or hatchback) are reconnected. Impex puts back glass at one to two hours, and asks you to leave the rear defroster off for 24 hours afterward so the new glass and its connections settle.
Shattered back glass also leaves a lot of glass in the cargo area or the bed of a truck. That is cleared as part of the job.
Break-ins and stones around Winston-Salem
Side and back glass breaks two ways. Most often it is a break-in: a smashed door window in a parking deck downtown, in a lot near the Wake Forest University campus, at a park or greenway lot or in an apartment parking space overnight. Less often it is a stone or a piece of debris thrown up on I-40, US 52 or I-74, which can take out a quarter window or a rear window as easily as a windshield.
Either way the car cannot be left open. In Forsyth County weather can turn quickly, and an open window lets rain into the door and the cabin. That is why a mobile visit helps: the glass is replaced where the car is, without driving it with an open window to a shop.
North Carolina’s rules for car windows
- Safety glass. Under G.S. 20-135 it is unlawful to knowingly drive an NC-registered vehicle made on or after January 1, 1936 unless it has safety glass wherever glass is used in doors, windows, windshields, wings or partitions. A plastic sheet is a stopgap, not a fix.
- Tint. Under G.S. 20-127, side and rear windows must let through at least 35% of light (a meter reading over 32% is treated as compliant), with reflectance of 20% or less and no red, yellow or amber film. Pickups and minivans have exceptions behind the driver.
- Inspection. Since December 1, 2025, window tint is no longer checked at the NC safety inspection (S.L. 2025-47), but the tint limits still apply on the road.
If your old window had aftermarket film on it, the new glass will arrive without that film. Ask Impex what tint the replacement glass carries from the factory, and have new film applied afterward if you want it, within those limits.
Car window replacement and insurance
A window broken by a thief or a stone normally falls under comprehensive coverage. The NC Department of Insurance lists ‘breakage of glass’ among comprehensive losses and says comprehensive pays the repair less any deductible. If something was stolen from the car, that is a separate question for your policy: personal belongings are often covered by homeowner’s or renter’s insurance rather than auto, so check both.
- You choose the shop. G.S. 58-3-180 lets you select the repair service, and the insurer pays the same whichever you pick.
- No points for a break-in. A comprehensive claim for glass is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. Your insurer may still look at how often you file claims.
- Paperwork. Impex works with all major insurance providers. Keep the police report number and your photos together with your policy number.
The windshield is a different job
The windshield is laminated, not tempered, so a stone usually leaves a chip or a crack rather than a hole. Small damage can often be filled: see windshield repair in Winston-Salem for chips and windshield crack repair in Winston-Salem for cracks. A windshield past repair is replaced and, on many newer cars, the forward camera is calibrated after.
Impex also works with business fleets and keeps the glass common fleet vehicles use in stock. If a work truck or van in Winston-Salem has a broken window, say so on the quote form.

Questions people ask
Can a broken car window be repaired instead of replaced?
Not when it is tempered glass, which most door, quarter and back windows are. Tempered glass falls apart when it breaks, so the window is replaced.
How long does a car window replacement take?
Impex’s figures: 30 to 60 minutes for a side window, and you can drive away at once; one to two hours for back glass, with the rear defroster left off for 24 hours.
Does insurance cover a window broken in a break-in?
Usually under comprehensive coverage, less your deductible. Stolen belongings are a separate question, often for homeowner’s or renter’s insurance.
Can I drive with plastic over the window?
As a short stopgap to get somewhere safe. NC law (G.S. 20-135) requires safety glass wherever glass is used in the doors and windows, so have the glass replaced soon.
Will the new window be tinted like the old one?
Replacement glass carries the factory tint for that part. Aftermarket film on the old window does not come across; it can be applied again within NC’s limits.
